I haven’t posted in a while and though Syria, Egypt and the Middle East should be more pressing and worthy of a posting, it seems more appropriate to talk about Miley Cyrus…
First, I must state that I haven’t watched “the clip” or whatever that was. Have zero desire to do so, but I have inadvertently seen a couple photos of the incident due to reading a few articles on the topic and that’s more than enough.
A few decades ago Robert Bork wrote Slouching Towards Gomorrah and he like others saw what was going on in our culture and the underlying causes but he, like so many, have been ridiculed, ostracized and maligned as ignorant and backwards. And yet, here we are, culturally more filthy than we were twenty-five years ago.
Gehenna, the dumps, literally a stinking, fetid, burning trash pile.
Gomorrah was destroyed for a host of sins with fire and sulfur. Jesus used Gehenna to describe a similar fate for various sins. Regardless of whether Jesus was being literally descriptive about Hell or merely figurative, his point remains salient and should sink in.
But this isn’t a post about Gehenna; it’s a post about the current state of affairs for our nation. We’ve got a heart issue. We’ve got a soul issue, and it’s only getting worse.
There’ve been a myriad of articles discussing the whatever-that-was that Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke did on MTV the other night and frankly my first thought when I’d heard about it was not one of shock. This is MTV, it’s been part of their schtick for years. In fact that’s pretty much most of the point of media these days. What will get your attention, what will titillate and have you coming back for more? Tangentially I had already been saying, Robin who? No, I don’t keep up with celebrities and what’s going on in Hollywood or the music industry. Things change so fast, no-bodies become famous overnight for nothing and many of us are deemed mere rubes because we don’t keep up. I’m actually glad and a bit proud of the fact that I’m a bit socially ignorant when it comes to what or who is popular. There’s more important things in life, like what’s going on in Syria or Egypt.
So, another blogger wrote a posting about Robin Thicke and what we as parents and adults should be saying to our sons and young boys/men. That got me thinking that the time and place dial needed to be turned back a bit and a stream of thought response flowed from there which follows below:
It doesn’t help matters when the man’s wife and mother don’t put any blame on their son/husband for his part in the whatever that was.
There is a level of ignorance and relativity that is “thick” in media/hollywood, music, etc and it’s so enmeshed in our culture now that it’s hard to tell whether they’re reflecting one another or one leading the other along. Yeah, you talk to your sons, but it also starts with being responsible parents. Sure, there’s a lot parents aren’t going to be able to do, but it’s clear many, many parents really aren’t trying very hard beyond just making sure their children are fed, clothed and sheltered – and even then sometimes there’s doubts… You are an adult, they are the child. You say “NO!” There is such a thing as appropriateness. There is such a thing as wisdom. Too many people have forgotten those three things. It is not appropriate for children to be listening to or watching most things on tv, the radio or what-have-you. From merely cursing to the overt sexualization of women, to violence for entertainment purposes. Our society seems to have lost their collective brains over the last forty years, all in the name of freedom, equality and “being true to ourselves”. Stuff it. We truly are becoming Rome.
We have our bread and circuses, we find enjoyment in orgies and death for entertainment. Miley Cyrus is a product mostly due to her parents choices just as surely as Robin Thicke is of his. Celebrity. Celebrities are idiots selling fantasy and we lap it up. Miley is doing what she thinks she needs to do, what she thinks we want, which is sad because many would go right along and agree with it even as we wag our fingers with a smirk. “Oh so naughty. Oh so delicious. Give me more.” We become guilty by association, by buying into their product. What else should we expect? It seems incredulous that people do not even understand the basics of what it means to be or how to be even a mediocre parent and yet it shouldn’t surprise when it’s clear that the breakdown didn’t start out of thin air with Gen X.
Poor parenting can be a generational thing, a societal/cultural “thing”. Break down and apart the nuclear family, emasculate the father’s role, bastardize and sexualize the mother’s, all so we can be “happy” individuals doing whatever our inner self wants and thinks is right. And so we have long passed slouching towards Gomorrah; no, we’re sliding down the scree to the valley of Gehenna. A nation of reprobates, given to their inner carnal desires in the name of “ME!”
Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke? That’s the United States on that stage. We raised that, we bought it, we’ve become it. What’s in our minds? What’s in our bookshelves? What’s in our dvd cases? What’s in our music selections? Is it good and uplifting or is it not because hey, it’s “fun”? What a sad, sorry state of affairs for this nation and our culture and yet not surprising at all. Not at all. We have only ourselves to blame, not Miley or Robin.
It takes a lot to surprise me any more in the news and current events.
Wake up America. You are not the center of attention. This world is not about or for you only. Life is not about your personal gratification or fulfillment. Life is not about getting your jollies. You aren’t the boss. A person left to their own devices, letting their free will reign supreme is a fool for a pilot and you will surely land in the Valley of Gehenna. When people defend Miley Cyrus’ and Robin Thicke’s actions and all the other stuff of a similar nature, think about why. Context matters. The point matters. What’s their point/position?
Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. 1 Cor. 16:18-20
No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. Matt. 6:24
For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 2 Tim. 4:3
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? Matt. 16:26
Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire. Jude 1:7
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? Jer. 17:
Also Worth Reading. “Adults are supposed to protect young people. Adults are supposed to refuse to treat young people like little gods, put them on pedestals, and parade them on stages. But adults do it, anyway, and our culture is just dumb, and just numb, enough to act like it’s perfectly normal.”
Love your children. Love your fellow man. Love yourselves. Love your Creator.
But I’m a Christian and the world says I’m a backwards, bigoted troglodyte so what do I know, eh?
